Kaplan Centre UCT Student Creative Content Competition: Terms and Conditions
1. Introduction and acceptance
1.1 These terms and conditions ("Terms") govern the Kaplan Centre UCT Student Creative Content Competition ("the Competition").
1.2 By submitting an Entry, an Entrant confirms that they have read, understood and agree to be bound by these Terms and by the decisions of the Promoter, which are final.
1.3 These Terms should be read together with the University of Cape Town's policies referred to in clause 7.
2. Definitions
In these Terms:
"Competition Period" means the six-month period set out in clause 5.
"Entrant" means a person who submits an Entry.
"Entry" means original content submitted to the Competition in accordance with these Terms.
"Monthly Round" means each calendar month within the Competition Period.
"Prize" means the prize described in clause 11.
"Promoter" means the Kaplan Centre at the University of Cape Town.
"UCT" means the University of Cape Town.
"Winner" means the Entrant selected as the winner of a Monthly Round.
3. Promoter
3.1 The Competition is run by the Kaplan Centre, University of Cape Town
3.2 The Promoter receives, collates and reviews all Entries before any Entry is approved for publication.
4. Eligibility
4.1 The Competition is open only to students who are registered at UCT at the time of entry and at the time the Prize is awarded.
4.2 Entrants must provide their full name, UCT student number and UCT email address with each Entry. The Promoter may verify registration status with UCT.
4.3 Employees of the Kaplan Centre, members of the judging panel and their immediate families are not eligible to enter.
5. Competition period
5.1 The Competition runs for six months, from 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027.
5.2 Each Monthly Round closes at midnight on the last day of that month. Entries received after the close of a Monthly Round will be considered in the next Monthly Round, if any.
5.3 Entries received after the close of the final Monthly Round will not be considered.
6. How to enter
6.1 Entries must be submitted via the www.jewishhumour.com website and include the details required in clause 4.2 and a short title or description of the Entry.
6.2 Each Entrant may submit a maximum of three Entries per Monthly Round. Each Entry is considered only in the Monthly Round in which it is received.
6.3 Entry is free. No purchase is required.
6.4 The Promoter is not responsible for Entries that are lost, delayed, incomplete or corrupted in transmission.
7. Submission requirements and content standards
7.1 Each Entry must be the Entrant's own original work, created by the Entrant, and must not infringe the copyright, trade mark, privacy or other rights of any person.
7.2 Entries must be creative, positive and respectful. An Entry must not be racist, discriminatory, hateful, offensive, abusive, defamatory or otherwise inappropriate.
7.3 Entries must respect the rights, dignity and privacy of others. An Entrant who features an identifiable person in an Entry is responsible for obtaining that person's consent before submitting the Entry.
7.4 Entries must comply with all relevant UCT policies and guidelines, including those relating to social media, anti-discrimination, harassment and respectful conduct (UCT policy).
7.5 Entries must not have previously won another competition or been published commercially.
8. Review, moderation and publication
8.1 Entries will not be published immediately. The Promoter will review every Entry to confirm that it meets these Terms and is suitable for publication.
8.2 Submission of an Entry does not guarantee publication. The Promoter may, in its sole discretion, decline to publish any Entry that does not meet these Terms or that it considers unsuitable.
8.3 Approved Entries may be published on www.jewishhumour.com and any other associated Kaplan Centre or UCT channels.
8.4 An Entrant may ask for a published Entry to be removed by contacting the Promoter. The Promoter will take reasonable steps to remove it, but cannot recall copies already shared by third parties.
9. Intellectual property and license
9.1 Entrants retain ownership of the copyright and other intellectual property in their Entries.
9.2 By submitting an Entry, the Entrant grants the Promoter and UCT a non-exclusive, royalty-free license to reproduce, publish, display and share the Entry, in whole or in part, for non-commercial purposes connected with the Competition and the promotion of the Kaplan Centre and UCT.
9.3 The Promoter will credit the Entrant by name, and/or social media handle when publishing an Entry, unless the Entrant asks to remain anonymous.
9.4 The Promoter may make minor edits for formatting, length or accessibility, but will not materially alter an Entry without the Entrant's consent.
9.5 The Entrant warrants that the Entry is original and that its publication will not infringe the rights of any third party.
10. Winner selection and notification
10.1 One Winner will be selected for each Monthly Round, giving six Winners in total.
10.2 Winners will be chosen by a judging panel appointed by the Promoter on the basis of originality, creativity and relevance to the topic. Only Entries that meet these Terms are eligible to win.
10.3 The Winner will be notified by email to their UCT email address within seven days of the close of the Monthly Round.
10.4 An Entrant may win only once during the Competition Period.
10.5 The Promoter's decision on Winners is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
11. Prize
11.1 The Prize for each Monthly Round is one Jeans Kitchen voucher to the value of R150.
11.2 The Prize is not transferable and cannot be exchanged for cash.
11.3 The voucher is subject to the terms, conditions and expiry date set by Jeans Kitchen. The Promoter is not responsible for the goods or services provided by Jeans Kitchen.
11.4 If the Prize becomes unavailable for reasons beyond the Promoter's control, the Promoter may substitute a prize of similar value.
11.5 The Prize will be delivered to the Winner via email.
12. Privacy and personal information
12.1 The Promoter will process Entrants' personal information in accordance with the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013 (POPIA) and UCT's privacy policies.
12.2 Personal information will be used only to administer the Competition, verify eligibility, contact Winners and credit published Entries.
12.3 Personal information will not be shared with third parties except as needed to administer the Competition or as required by law.
12.4 Entrants may request access to, correction of, or deletion of their personal information by contacting the Promoter.
13. Disqualification
13.1 The Promoter may disqualify any Entry or Entrant, and withhold or reclaim a Prize, if the Entrant is ineligible, breaches these Terms, submits work that is not their own, or acts dishonestly in connection with the Competition.
13.2 Conduct that may breach UCT policies may be referred to the relevant UCT office in line with those policies.
14. Limitation of liability
14.1 To the extent permitted by law, the Promoter and UCT are not liable for any loss, damage or injury arising from participation in the Competition or use of the Prize, except where caused by their gross negligence or willful misconduct.
14.2 Entrants indemnify the Promoter and UCT against any claim by a third party that an Entry infringes that third party's rights.
15. Amendment and termination
15.1 The Promoter may amend these Terms, or suspend or end the Competition, if circumstances beyond its reasonable control make this necessary.
15.2 Any changes will be published on www.jewishhumour.com. Continued participation after publication means acceptance of the amended Terms.
16. General and governing law
16.1 These Terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of South Africa.
16.2 If any provision of these Terms is found to be invalid, the remaining provisions continue in full force.
16.3 Where applicable, the Competition is conducted in accordance with section 36 of the Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008
